The 6th annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards ceremony took place Wednesday night at the Time & Life building in New York City this week. Even though I was a judge—and viewed more than 1,000 handbag entries from around the world in the judging process—I had no idea who was going to win come awards night. Find out which independent designers across seven categories won over at InStyle.com, including my faves, the classic and timeless handbag by J.Lane and Ita Collection’s bright clutch. I was bummed Jess Ruzzuti didn’t take home the price for her innovative cork creation, which hardly looks like cork by the way.

To walk the red carpet, I wore a dress from one of my favorite designers CrOp by David Peck’s spring 2012 collection, which I coincidentally got an exclusive first look at back during fashion week last year for Discovery’s TreeHugger.com. Read it, here: Quirky Prints, Timeless Silhouettes in Crop by David Peck Spring 2012

I paired David Peck’s gorgeous white silk dress with yellow silk Prada pumps that have a gold heel; a seashell-inspired vintage clutch that I scored from Elba at the Seventh Avenue flea market in Park Slope, Brooklyn; a huge Marc Jacobs bobble ring, and colorful vintage clip-on earrings, a gift from my younger sister.

Starting tomorrow, New York will be aflutter with the fashion set trotting from one show to the next. Keeping track of everything is utter chaos, but fortunately I’ve narrowed down all the green fashion shows into a neat and complete list for Discovery’s TreeHugger.com. Plus, I scored some pre-New York Fashion Week interviews with some of the hottest fashion designers, including Costello Tagliapietra and Crop by David Peck.

On Monday, I got an exclusive first look at Crop by David Peck’s Spring 2012 collection at the LEED-certified Crosby Street Hotel in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.

Playing off the Gulf Coast theme of their fall 2011 collection, David Peck draws inspiration from the vibrant community of New Orleans, Louisiana. Described by the designer as “colorful, quirky, and classic,” the eco-fashion collection is full of vibrant colors and patterns, made wearable with timeless and feminine silhouettes.

From the inside of a bag of Zapp’s potato chips to Blanche DuBois, a fictional character from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Peck captures the vibrancy of New Orleans culture in three parts: flora and fauna, food and jazz, and fact and fiction.

Short for “Creative Opportunities,” Crop by David Peck is a Houston, Texas-based ethical fashion line and if their successful debut says anything about their future, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Peck transforms images of villages, children, and living conditions in Uganda into gorgeous form-flattering fashion for spring/summer 2011. Continue reading my article on Discovery’s TreeHugger.com
